[This] is one of those recordings where pretty well everything seems to have gone right. With the Concertgebouw one has no fear that the sheer beauty of Zemlinsky's orchestral textures will be understated, but the urgency and strength beneath the surfaces are evident too, and it's quite an achievement for such an orchestra of Mahler specialists to get Zemlinsky's sound, so like Mahler and yet so very unlike, unerringly right. The soloists are simply superb: Marc is voluptuously caressing... Hagegard has nobility and strength as well as tenderness... Throughout the orchestral playing is immaculately balanced as well as sheerly beautiful; I don't know that I've ever heard a better performance of the symphony... A distinguished issue, most warmly recommended.

Zemlinsky’s Florentine Tragedy is a disturbing, shocking piece, but to make its fullest impact it also needs to sound ravishingly beautiful... [It] urgently needs, in short, an orchestra of the Royal Concertgebouw’s stature, and in this reading they sound quite magnificent... Chailly is the real star of the performance, pacing the opera so well that it seems over in no time, drawing richly complex but never muddy textures from his remarkable orchestra.
