Review

Often described as esoteric and whimsical, ascetic and mystical, Satie’s music is easily stereotyped. As apt as those adjectives may often be, this unusual collection displays a broader diversity of style and expression. It contains the rarely heard Sports et divertissements, comprising 20 snap-shots, none lasting more than a minute or so, each evoking a sport or recreational activity. This is surely one of Satie’s finest works, and it ought to be better known. Also recorded are early pieces, including the Valse-ballet and Fantaisie-valse, published in 1885. Much of this music displays a childlike innocence and simplicity, but here we also find wit, pastiche and evocation.

Pascal Roge has already consolidated his reputation as a performer of French repertoire, and of Satie in particular. This is his third Satie recording, and it shares the gentle poise and elegance, and the pinpoint clarity, of the first two. As with his earlier Satie discs (10/84 and 5/89), Roge’s responses are generally cool and reserved; this undoubtedly suits the ethereal timelessness of much of Satie’s output, but occasionally I found myself wishing, if only for contrast in the context of the disc as a whole, that Roge would let himself go a bit more (the “Esquisses et Sketch montmartrois” from the Carnet d’esquisses et de croquis, for example). That said, his playing is wholly idiomatic and vividly captures the spirit of Satie’s strange and idiosyncratic imagination. This collection of miniatures (the disc has 60 tracks) allows for selective listening, although each work, especially the Sports et divertissements, should be heard in full. Recorded with a wonderfully natural, if very close, piano sound, this is one of the most enjoyable and varied Satie recitals I have heard.

Erik Satie (17 May 1866 – 1 July 1925) was a French composer and pianist. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, Surrealism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. In addition to his body of music, Satie was "a thinker with a gift of eloquence" who left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications, from the dadaist 391 to the American culture chronicle Vanity Fair.

Pascal Rogé (born 6 April 1951) is a French pianist. At the age of 11, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire and won first prize for both piano and chamber music by the age of 15. Rogé's particular strengths lie in his sensitive and personal interpretations of 20th century French composers; he has made recordings of complete cycles of Ravel, Poulenc, and Satie, among others. His repertoire also includes d'Indy, Saint-Saëns, as well as the great German masters -- Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven.

Jahrhunderts.
