Much of Fauré’s late music inhabits a world of profound calm, with long arching melodies unfolding against smoothly rippling accompaniments, and an avoidance of violent contrasts. The Op. 115 Quintet, with its mercurial Scherzo and its melancholy slow movement, is an immediately attractive work; but its neglected predecessor yields up its secrets more slowly. First-rate performances by the now sadly disbanded Domus, and an admirably warm recording.

-- Misha Donat, BBC Music Magazine

'The playing of Domus in these two masterpieces is as light, delicate and full of insight as one would expect. They make one fall for this music all over again. This is the best-ever version of these two pieces' (The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs)

'Among the new discs celebrating the 150th anniversary of Fauré's birth this is outstanding' (The Guardian)

'Chamber music disc of the month … stunningly played … beautifully recorded … A worthy successor to the group's set of the two Piano Quartets' (Classic FM Magazine)

'Profound and fascinating works of alluring beauty performed with care and affection' (Classic CD)
'Exquisite' (San Francisco Examiner)

'Quelle merveille!' (Diapason, France)

Gabriel Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, nocturnes for piano and the songs "Après un rêve" and "Clair de lune". Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style. His music has been described as linking the end of Romanticism with 20th century modernism.

The piano quartet Domus was formed in 1979 at Sandor Vegh's International Musicians' Seminar at Prussia Cove in Cornwall. The original members were Susan Tomes (piano), Krysia Osostowicz (violin), Robin Ireland (viola) and Timothy Hugh (cello). By 1994, having recorded virtually all of the main Romantic piano quartet repertoire, and each member having established notable solo careers, Domus decided to disband. Domus's first and last recording, Fauré Piano Quartets and Piano Quintets, made for Hyperion in 1985 and 1994, both won Gramophone Awards.
