Giuseppe Martucci (Capua, 6 January 1856 – Naples, 1 June 1909) was an Italian composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. As a composer and teacher, Martucci was influential in reviving Italian interest in non-operatic music. He wrote no operas, which was unusual among Italian composers of his generation, but instead concentrated on instrumental music and songs. His music was championed by Arturo Toscanini during much of the conductor's career. As a conductor, he helped to introduce Wagner's operas to Italy and also gave important early concerts of English music there.

Ottorino Respighi (9 July 1879 – 18 April 1936) was an Italian composer and musicologist. He is best known for his orchestral music, particularly the three Roman tone poems: Fountains of Rome (Fontane di Roma), Pines of Rome (I pini di Roma), and Roman Festivals (Feste romane). His musicological interest in 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century music led him to compose pieces based on the music of these periods. Although Respighi was known primarily as composers of instrumental and orchestral music, he also wrote a number of operas, the most famous of which is La fiamma.

The Ex Novo Ensemble was born in 1979 from the collaboration between a number of young musicians and the composer Claudio Ambrosini. A particular dedication to the in-depth study of contemporary musical language later became the starting point for a rereading of the classical repertoire and particularly of a number of fascinating works, for rare combinations of instruments, which are still not widely known. The group has recorded concerts and productions for the main radio stations such as RAI, Radio France, WDR and SDR. Many composers have written and dedicated their works to the Ex Novo Ensemble.
