José Vianna da Motta (22 April 1868 – 1 June 1948) was a distinguished Portuguese pianist, teacher, and composer. He studied with Franz Liszt at Weimar in 1885 and with Hans von Bülow two years later. In the following years he undertook many concert tours all round the world. Although he was renowned for his virtuosity, he was also dedicated to the music of J. S. Bach and Beethoven. He also included lesser known composers in his recitals, such as works by Charles-Valentin Alkan. Vianna da Motta was a composer in his own right, composing orchestral works (including a symphony) as well as piano pieces.

Portuguese pianist João Costa Ferreira (b. 1986) has performed in several concert halls in Europe. He performs frequently for the Portuguese state classical music radio station RDP-Antena 2. He holds the prestigious Diplôme Supérieur d’Exécution of the École Normale de Musique de Paris-Alfred Cortot. Ferreira has won several prizes, notably the 2nd prize in the XVth Maria Campina International Piano Competition. He often gives masterclasses in the music conservatories of Portugal. Since 2014, Ferreira is an AvA Musical Editions Artist, collaborating on the publication of José Viana da Mota’s piano works.
