Alan Hovhaness (March 8, 1911 – June 21, 2000) was an American composer and was one of the most prolific 20th-century composers. His official catalog comprising 67 numbered symphonies and 434 opus numbers, with well over 500 surviving works. Hovhaness' music is described by The Boston Globe music critic Richard Buell as "assimilates the music of many cultures", such as Armenian and Japanese, and the atmosphere is "hushed, reverential, mystical, nostalgic". Hovhaness taught at the Boston Conservatory in 1948-51; his students there included the jazz musicians Sam Rivers and Gigi Gryce.

Gerard Schwarz (born August 19, 1947) is an American conductor and trumpeter. He graduated from the High School of Performing Arts and the Juilliard (New York) and began his musical career as a trumpeter, performing until 1973 as principal of the New York Philharmonic under Pierre Boulez. He was music director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (2001-2006) and the Seattle Symphony (1985-2011), and also led the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony. Schwarz made over 100 recordings with the Seattle Symphony, and is noted for championing American composers.

The Shanghai Quartet a string quartet that formed in 1983 at the Shanghai Conservatory in China. They won 2nd prize at the 1984 Portsmouth International Quartet Competition in England, then left China to study with the Vermeer Quartet from 1985 to 1987. The quartet is made up of four members: first violinist Weigang Li, second violinist Yi-Wen Jiang, violist Honggang Li, and cellist Nicholas Tzavaras. They are currently located at in New Jersey. The four members are visiting guest professors at the Shanghai Conservatory and Central Conservatory of Music in China where they give master-classes.
