Review

George Onslow (1784-1853) was French of English descent. He was an amateur cellist of independent means and wrote a large amount of chamber music. Previous experience of Onslow’s works in this genre has proved most enjoyable; his melodic craft and instrumental fluency are noteworthy and afford much pleasure.

The variety afforded by wind (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) and strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass) give a range of colour and incident to the Nonet, which is full of vitality with curvaceous lines. This is music totally untroubled by outside influences; what matters here is that music is an art in itself and that the listener should be beguiled.

Just occasionally some suspense enters Onslow’s creativity, the slow introduction to the String Quintet (2 violins, viola, cello and double bass) for example; this work too is generally unbridled and also not without subtlety or imagination – the scherzo-like Minuet is marked Allegro impetuoso, for example, quite a whirlwind, in fact, and there is plenty of dynamism in the finale.

Music to enjoy and admire. These performances are first rate, and the musicians have plenty of insight into and sympathy for Onslow’s vibrant pieces. The recording is also excellent.

George Onslow (27 July 1784 – 3 October 1853) was a French composer of English descent. His wealth, position and personal tastes allowed him to pursue a path unfamiliar to most of his French contemporaries, and more similar to that of his contemporary German romantic composers. Onslow was a prolific composer of chamber music (including 36 string quartets, 34 string quintets and 10 piano trios). He also wrote four symphonies, four operas and other works for piano and strings. Esteemed by many of the critics of his time, his reputation declined swiftly after his death and has only been revived in recent years.

The Ma’alot Quintet was founded in 1986. The winning of the 1989 ARD Munich Competition promoted international concert tours (the USA, South East Asia, South America), radio broadcasts and invitations to many important music festivals. The ensemble’s repertoire embraces music from the classical period to the Avantgarde. All members of the Quintet, which include Stephanie Winker (flute), Christian Wetzel (oboe), Ulf-Guido Schäfer (clarinet), Sibylle Mahni (horn), and Volker Tessmann (bassoon), are principal solo players or professors in world’s leading orchestras and academies.
