Schubert was a veritable dancing machine who tossed off minuets, waltzes, gallops, and other such pieces in droves when he wasn’t otherwise busy with symphonies, sonatas, chamber works, and hundreds of songs. He usually grouped them in batches, although brief little stand-alone dances pop up now and then. Schubert’s disarming melodic gift always prevails, along with his usual quota of unexpected harmonic twists and turns. The best way to play Schubert dances is to find their lilting center and apply rubato discreetly, and to always, always sing.

In his second release devoted to Schubert dances, Daniel Lebhardt perfectly captures the spirit of these works. He imbues repeats with subtle variations of touch and emphasis, and manages to bind together detaché phrases like strings of pearls. Lebhardt’s crisp kick-stepping in certain D. 734 Ländler selections proves comparably stylish yet temperamentally different when heard alongside Michael Endres’ warmly “gemütlich” approach. On the basis of this disc and its predecessor, I hope that Lebhardt eventually works his way through all of the Schubert dances; in fact, I’ve already made shelf space for the remaining volumes. Franz Schubert (31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer who was extremely prolific during his short lifetime. His output consists of over six hundred secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the late Classical era and early Romantic era and is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century. His music is characterized by pleasing tunes while still has "a great wealth of technical finesse".

Born in Hungary, Daniel studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest with István Gulyás and Gyöngyi Keveházi, then with Pascal Nemirovski at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He was a prizewinner at the Young Classical Artists Trust auditions in 2015 and currently lives in Birmingham. In 2014 Lebhardt won 1st Prize at the Young Concert Artists International auditions in Paris and New York. He has received reinvitations to Wigmore Hall, London, the Auditorium du Louvre, Paris and Merkin Concert Hall in New York, as well as and tours in China and South America.
