Alfred Schnittke (November 24, 1934 – August 3, 1998) was a Soviet and German composer. Schnittke completed his graduate work in composition at the Moscow Conservatory in 1961 and taught there from 1962 to 1972 Schnittke's early music shows the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich. Later, he created a new style which has been called "polystylism", where he juxtaposed and combined music of various styles past and present. As his health deteriorated, Schnittke's music started to abandon much of the extroversion of his polystylism and retreated into a more withdrawn, bleak style.

James DePreist (November 21, 1936 – February 8, 2013) was one of the first African-American conductors on the world stage. He was the nephew of contralto Marian Anderson. DePreist was music director of the Oregon Symphony from 1980 to 2003, and during that time transformed it from a small, part-time orchestra to a nationally recognized group with a number of recordings. His other leadership roles include tenures with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the Malmö Symphony, and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic. DePreist made over 50 recordings and was awarded 15 honorary doctorates.

Leif Segerstam (born 2 March 1944 in Vaasa, Ostrobothnia, Finland) is a Finnish conductor, composer, violinist, violist and pianist, especially known for his 309 symphonies, along with his other works in his extensive œuvre. Segerstam has conducted in a variety of orchestras since 1963, mostly American, Australian and European orchestras. He is widely known through his recorded discography, which includes the complete symphonies of Blomdahl, Brahms, Mahler, Nielsen, and Sibelius, as well as many works by contemporary composer, such as Einojuhani Rautavaara, Allan Pettersson and Alfred Schnittke.
