Friedrich Gernsheim (17 July 1839 – 10 September 1916) was a German composer, conductor and pianist. Gernsheim studied with Louis Liebe in Worms, Edward Rosenhain in Frankfurt, and Ignaz Moscheles in Leipzig. was a prolific composer, especially of orchestral, chamber and instrumental music, and songs. His earlier works show the influence of Schumann, and from 1868, a Brahmsian influence is very palpable. Gernsheim taught music at the Cologne Conservatory (his pupils there included Engelbert Humperdinck and Carl Lachmund). In the latter year he became a teacher at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin.

Johannes Brahms (7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer and pianist. In his lifetime, Brahms's popularity and influence were considerable. Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, and voice and chorus. Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire. An uncompromising perfectionist, Brahms destroyed some of his works and left others unpublished. Brahms is often considered both a traditionalist and an innovator. His music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters, with a highly romantic nature embedded within.

The Mariani Piano Quartet was founded in 2009. The Quartet first came into the spotlight at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb in 2011, and now is a regular guest at major music festivals such as the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival, as well as being at home on Europe's most prestigious stages. The work of the Mariani Piano Quartet has meanwhile been documented in a highly acclaimed discography, which includes rarities such as the piano quartets of Martinů and Enescu, as well as new discoveries like the works of Emilie Mayer or Friedrich Gernsheim.
