Adolf Barjansky was born in Odessa in 1851 to a wealthy Russian Jewish family. He received his musical training from the pianist and composer Ignaz Tedesco, and later studied in Leipzig, Vienna and Paris. His well-known, relatively small work, which he composed mainly between 1892 and 1900 includes, in addition to the works for piano, a sonata for cello and piano, a piano trio, a piano quartet and two string quartets. Barjansky lived with his family in Odessa and, according to a contemporary report, was not only active in composition, but also a generous benefactor. He died in Odessa in 1900.

Julia Severus graduated from the Berlin University of Arts and from Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she studied with Mikhail Voskresensky and Lev Naumov. She received her Ph.D. from the Technische Universität Berlin. In 2002 she founded the piano ensembles Aurora Duo and Quartet. Their recordings (on Naxos) for two pianos, eight hands, of Russian Romantic piano transcriptions and of Norwegian contemporary composers have received excellent reviews. Her solo recordings of Franck’s early piano works and Bizet’s complete solo piano works have also been highly acclaimed.
