Review

ARTISTIC QUALITY: 10 / SOUND QUALITY: 9

Anna Russell once joked that lieder were best suited to singers “with no voice, but GREAT artistry!” She had a point, but Elly Ameling was special, even among lieder singers. Her voice was gorgeous: warm, welcoming, and expressive with just the right sort of naturalness to make her lieder singing believable in a domestic, as opposed to operatic, setting. She never made a bad recording, but few were as charming as this collection of the complete Haydn songs. It was even more significant because it represented the first time that most music lovers would have known that Haydn wrote songs with piano–53 of them to be exact.

Indeed, not only did Haydn write songs, but as with most else in Western music, he can legitimately be said to have invented the German art-song, except that his late lieder, the two sets of Six Original Canzonettas plus a handful of single items, set English texts almost exclusively. They date from his London period, and are uniformly marvelous. Perhaps the most moving of them is “O Tuneful Voice”, Haydn’s farewell to England and his many English friends. Charming and catchy at the least, brilliantly profound at best, and still sounding very fine (in all formats) in this latest multi-channel remastering, this set is a classic. [4/28/2009]

Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 – 31 May 1809) was a prominent and prolific Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the piano trio and his contributions to musical form have earned him the epithets "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet". Haydn's work was central to the development of what came to be called sonata form. At the time of his death, aged 77, he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. Haydn was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a teacher of Beethoven, and the older brother of composer Michael Haydn.

Elly Ameling (born 8 February 1933 in Rotterdam) is a Dutch soprano. She made her career mainly as a concert and lieder singer with some excursions into opera (Mozart, Haydn) and became world-renowned for her recitals of French and German songs and for her superlative interpretive gifts. She is equally at home in chamber music, orchestral music, operas, and oratorios. Contemporary works, particularly by her countrymen Bertus van Lier and Robert Heppener, are also part of her large repertoire. Ameling has recorded more than 150 albums and won many prizes. She retired in 1995.

Jörg Demus (2 December 1928 – 16 April 2019) was an Austrian classical pianist who appeared internationally and made many recordings. Demus was active as a lied accompanist and a chamber music partner, appearing with singers such as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elly Ameling and Peter Schreier, and with string players such as Josef Suk and Antonio Janigro. He performed widely as a soloist on both modern and historical instruments, returning the fortepiano to concert podiums. Demus was also a composer, chiefly of music for the piano, chamber music and lied.
