Though Menahem Pressler occupies the piano stool, collectors should note that the Beaux Arts Trio encountered here is not that which recorded Brahms's trios for violin, cello and piano some five years ago, but the original team with Daniel Guilet as violinist and Bernard Greenhouse as cellist. Now just a quarter of a century old, their performances come up with welcome tonal ripeness and warmth in this half-price (i.e. two CDs for the price of one) twin-pack. The playing itself I can best describe in a nutshell as totally committed (try the proud Hungary-inspired Andante con moto of Op. 87 as a sample of these artists' vividness and verve) even if just once or twice (as in the pesante second subject of the B major Trio's finale) the pianist's enthusiasm oversteps discretion. In the Clarinet Trio balance too often goes against Greenhouse's lovely lyrical cello, as it sometimes does against the horn itself in the Op. 4 Trio, played affectionately, albeit with less than its full vigour by a different, less vibrantly recorded group (Grumiaux, Orval and Sebok). Space precludes the inclusion of the unauthenticated yet wholly typical youthful Trio for violin, cello and piano so gallantly brought into the catalogue by the Beaux Arts way back in 1968. Too bad. But it's splendid value for money, all the same.

The Beaux Arts Trio was a noted piano trio, whose debut on 13 July 1955, at the Berkshire Music Festival, Lenox, Massachusetts, USA, known today as the Tanglewood Music Center. The trio was celebrated for their vivacity, emotional depth and wide-ranging repertoire. The Beaux Arts Trio recorded the entire standard piano trio repertoire. Throughout its existence, the trio was held together by the founding member, pianist Menahem Pressler. The violin and cello members changed on a number of occasions. Their final concert was in Lucerne, Switzerland on 6 September 2008.

Er ist mit 91 Jahren wohl der älteste aktive Konzertpianist: Menahem Pressler. Bekannt wurde der Ausnahmemusiker mit dem Beaux Arts Trio, bis zu dessen Auflösung 2008 eines der bedeutendsten Klaviertrios weltweit.
Menahem Pressler Familie floh nach der Reichspogromnacht 1939 über Triest nach Palästina. Presslers Großeltern und auch andere Verwandte wurden Opfer des Holocaust.
Menahem Pressler ist der Gründer des Beaux Arts Trio. Sein Mozart-Spiel sei Seele, Liebe, Hingabe, urteilt ein Kritiker über ihn.
Wer dachte, Menahem Pressler würde sich nach dem Ende des Klaviertrios mit 85 Jahren zur Ruhe setzen, wurde eines Besseren belehrt. Er startete noch einmal durch, nahm seine Solokarriere wieder auf und debütiert seitdem mit den größten und besten Orchestern der Welt. „Dass ich jetzt in meinem Alter noch einmal eine Solokarriere mache, das ist ein Wunder“, sagt Menahem Pressler selbst.
Menahem Pressler hat ein bewegtes Leben. Mit 16 Jahren musste der gebürtige Madgeburger aus Deutschland vor den Nazis fliehen, seine Familie entkam nur knapp der Deportation. Sein Weg führte über Israel nach Amerika. Dort begann er seine Karriere als Pianist, begegnete all den großen Meistern seiner Zeit, ging mit Bruno Walter ins Konzert, trank mit Alma Mahler samstags Tee und zählte Franz Waxmann zu seinem engen Freundeskreis. Mit seinen 91 Jahren stößt er ein Fenster in die Vergangenheit auf, und mit dem iPad unterm Arm ist er doch völlig im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen. Seine tief empfundene Liebe zur Musik und die Musik selbst scheinen sein Jungbrunnen zu sein. Unermüdlich reist er um die Welt, um Konzerte zu spielen, CDs aufzunehmen und junge Musiker in Meisterkursen zu unterrichten. Sein Alter merkt man ihm nicht an, wenn er mit einem spitzbübischen Lächeln ein Lob ausspricht oder mit großer Strenge kritisiert.
Menahem Pressler wird nicht müde, seinen Zugang zur Musik jedem Menschen nahe zu bringen. „Jeder sollte ihn mindestens einmal in seinem Leben gehört haben“, empfiehlt Raphaël Merlin, der Cellist des französischen Streichquartetts Quatuor Ebené. Diese Gelegenheit haben wir nicht nur in dem Portrait, sondern auch am Silvesterabend dieses Jahres, wenn Menahem Pressler mit Sir Simon Rattle und den Berliner Philharmonikern das Jahr 2014 ausklingen lässt.
Der Tod ist ein Meister aus Deutschland, aber nun schafft er, der aufstrebende Weltrarchitekt, immerhin nach außen hin die Höflichkeit zu wahren.
