Review

ARTISTIC QUALITY: 9 / SOUND QUALITY: 9

Colin Davis is a fine Mozartean, as most readers/listeners will already know. His Philips recordings of the late symphonies with this orchestra stand among the best available, and this disc of 12 opera overtures is of similar quality. It may be that The Abduction from the Seraglio hasn’t quite the sparkle that some period-instrument groups bring to it (the percussion is very well-behaved), and Don Giovanni could have a touch more ferocity–but this is quibbling. The musical values here are first-class, with beautifully turned string playing, wonderful contributions from the wind section, and transparent textures: it all represents splendid “big band” Mozart in the modern tradition. RCA’s sonics, as with most issues from this source, are also warm and detailed. You can actually play the entire disc right through without ever becoming bored or feeling that it’s just too much of a good thing, and this fact alone speaks volumes. An excellent collection! Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 in Salzburg – 5 December 1791 in Vienna) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. Till his death in Vienna, he composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. Mozart is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music.
