Review

PERFORMANCE: ***** / SOUND: *****

A handy compendium brings together virtually the whole of Kodály’s orchestral output in committed and idiomatic performances recorded in three-dimensional sound. The highlights from the collection are the Suite, the sets of orchestral dances and the Peacock Variations – one of the finest sets ever written; but there is interest too in the rarer Concerto for Orchestra – earlier than Bartók’s and equally nationalistic – and the three-movement Symphony of 1961.

Zoltán Kodály (16 December 1882 in Kecskemét, Hungary – 6 March 1967 in Budapest) was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, pedagogue, linguist, and philosopher. He is best known internationally as the creator of the Kodály Method, which is widely taken up by pedagogues in Hungary and many other countries. His compositions blended Western-European style of music, including classical, late-romantic, impressionistic and modernist, with the knowledge and respect for the folk music of Hungary. Kodály and his compatriot Béla Bartók were lifelong friends, and champions of each other's music.

***

Antal Doráti (9 April 1906 – 13 November 1988) was a Hungarian-born conductor and composer who became a naturalized American citizen in 1943. He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy with Zoltán Kodály and Leo Weiner for composition, and Béla Bartók for piano. He made his conducting debut in 1924, and over the course of his career, made over 600 recordings, mostly for Mercury Records. Doráti was especially well known for his recordings of Tchaikovsky's music. Other prominent composers in Doráti's recording career are Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. He lived to make digital recordings, for English Decca Records.
