ARTISTIC QUALITY: 10 / SOUND QUALITY: 10
BIS has conveniently packaged Neeme Järvi's epoch-making set of Eduard Tubin's complete symphonies, hopefully giving them a new lease on retail life. In case you haven't been paying attention over the past decade or so, these works constitute as fine a legacy of Scandinavian music as the symphonies of Sibelius or Nielsen. There are some extraordinary masterpieces here, including Nos. 3, 5, 6, and 8, and the performances are every bit as marvelous as the music. The only disappointment is the limply played and distantly recorded account of the serenely beautiful No. 4, taken from a live concert in Bergen, Norway, but it would be churlish to deny this important project the highest recommendation as a result of this one lapse. Fortunately, an excellent new version of the Fourth has just been released on Alba so it's easy to supplement this complete set with that one extra work, and be in Tubin heaven. Not to be missed!

Eduard Tubin (18 June [O.S. 5 June] 1905 – 17 November 1982) was an Estonian composer, conductor, and choreographer. Tubin studied at the Tartu Higher Music School under the guidance of the Heino Eller. When the Soviet Union again occupied Estonia in 1944, Tubin fled to Stockholm, Sweden, where he wrote most of his greatest works, including two operas, symphonies 5-10, a second concerto for violin, one concerto for double-bass and one for balalaika, a piano concertino, much piano and violin music, choir and solo songs etc. Tubin often used Estonian folk music in his works, and was a very good orchestrator.

ReplyDeleteHi, there's an error reading when trying to download CD3, using all three of the links. I wonder if you could re-up please. All other CDs links working fine
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for fixing it
ReplyDeleteFirstly, many many thanks for the amazing resource that your blog is and the obvious time and effort you put in to maintaining both this and your newer blog. Unfortunately, the links for both this set and the Piano Music set return a message on Mega that 'The file you are trying to download is no longer available'. I realize that for very good reasons you may have had to remove these recordings but if they are still available it would be very much appreciated if they could be re-uploaded, many thanks
ReplyDeleteTo echo the previous comment, may I please ask that these links be restored. With many thanks.
