Carl Loewe (30 November 1796 – 20 April 1869) was a German composer, tenor singer and conductor. As a youth, he had a high soprano voice, and his voice developed into a fine tenor. Later in life, Loewe became very popular both as a composer and as a singer. In his lifetime, his songs (Lieder) were well known enough for some to call him the "Schubert of North Germany", and Hugo Wolf came to admire his work. Loewe wrote 5 operas, 17 oratorios, choral ballads, cantatas, chamber music and some piano solos. He is less known today, but his ballads and songs, which number over 400, are occasionally performed.

Linda Nicholson is one of the foremost keyboard players specialising in the performance of baroque, classical and early romantic music on period instruments. After studying at the Royal College of Music, she won the first two international competitions held for the fortepiano in Paris and Bruges. Since then she has gained an international reputation, performing in major festivals and concert series throughout Europe and the Far East. As a chamber musician, Nicholson has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with violinist Hiro Kurosaki, leader of Les Arts Florissants. She is also a founder member of The London Fortepiano Trio.
