Alexander Alyabyev (15 August [O.S. 4 August] 1787 – 6 March [O.S. 22 February] 1851) was a Russian composer known as one of the fathers of the Russian art song. He wrote seven operas, twenty musical comedies, a symphony, three string quartets, more than 200 songs, and many other pieces. His most famous work is The Nightingale (Соловей), a song based on a poem by Anton Delvig. Glinka and Balakirev wrote piano variations based on it, while Liszt wrote a transcription. Alyabyev also joined the Russian Army in 1812, during the Napoleonic War, and fought as an officer until 1823.

Mikhail Glinka (1 June [O.S. 20 May] 1804 – 15 February [O.S. 3 February] 1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country, and is often regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music. Glinka's compositions were an important influence on future Russian composers, notably the members of The Five, who took Glinka's lead and produced a distinctive Russian style of music. Glinka's two operas and other orchestral works have been fairly popular in concerts and recordings. He also composed many art songs, many piano pieces, and some chamber music.

Anton Rubinstein (November 28 [O.S.November 16] 1829 – November 20 [O.S. November 8] 1894) was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who became a pivotal figure in Russian culture when he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein who founded the Moscow Conservatory. As a pianist, Rubinstein ranks amongst the great 19th-century keyboard virtuosos. He was also a prolific composer throughout much of his life. Rubinstein wrote 20 operas and a large number of other works, including five piano concertos and six symphonies.

The Brahms Trio is one of the leading chamber ensembles of Russia. Founded as a part of the chamber music class of Konstantin Oznobishchev at the Gnessin School of Music in Moscow in 1988, the Brahms Trio has performed worldwide and has recorded much of Russian piano trio repertoire. The Trio made a significant contribution to enlarging the chamber repertoire by rediscovering unknown piano trios of Russian composers of the late-19th and early-20th century. The musicians of the Brahms Trio are professors of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and recipients of multiple awards and honors.
