Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (25 April/7 May 1840 – 25 October/6 November 1893) was a Russian composer of the romantic period who wrote some of the most popular music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky wrote many works that are popular with the classical music public, including his Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture, three ballets, last three symphonies, the 1st Piano Concerto and the Violin Concerto. Despite his many popular successes, Tchaikovsky's life was punctuated by personal crises and depression.

Paul (Pavel) Pabst (15 May 1854 – 9 June 1897) was a pianist, composer, and Professor of Piano at Moscow Conservatory. Pabst was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad), and studied piano with Anton Door in Vienna and Franz Liszt in Weimar. He taught at the Moscow Imperial Conservatory from 1878 to the end of his life. Amongst his pupils were Sergei Lyapunov, Nikolai Medtner and Alexander Goldenweiser. Pabst was considered one of the greatest pianists of his day, admired even by the great Franz Liszt. He wrote a Piano Concerto in E-flat major, and a Piano Trio dedicated to Anton Rubinstein.

The Brahms Trio is one of the leading chamber ensembles of Russia. Founded as a part of the chamber music class of Konstantin Oznobishchev at the Gnessin School of Music in Moscow in 1988, the Brahms Trio has performed worldwide and has recorded much of Russian piano trio repertoire. The Trio made a significant contribution to enlarging the chamber repertoire by rediscovering unknown piano trios of Russian composers of the late-19th and early-20th century. The musicians of the Brahms Trio are professors of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and recipients of multiple awards and honors.
